Parex receives permit to develop Colombia's first geothermal project
Parex Resources has received a license to develop a geothermal power project in eastern Colombia, part of the Andean country's efforts to diversify its energy mix, according to media reports.
Electricity generation capacity at the plant will initially range from 15kW to 60kW and may be expanded to 120kW, reports said, citing a mines and energy ministry resolution.
The project has been earmarked for the Maní and Aguazul areas of Casanare department, where Parex currently has oil and gas operations.
The Canadian company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BNamericas.
According to data from geological service SGC, Colombia boasts stored geothermal resources of 139 exajoules, equivalent to 1.17GW of power generation capacity.
In 2021, Parex began operating Colombia's first pilot geothermal power plant, generating up to 72MWh of electricity a month from a 100kW-capacity facility in Casanare.
