Permitting begins for US$130mn Panama wind project

Renewable energy producer CMI Energía has set foot in Panama with plans for a US$130mn, 90MW wind farm in Coclé province.

The Guatemala City-based group, through special purpose company Eolonica, has submitted an environmental impact study to the environment ministry for the La Patrona project.

CMI Energía CEO Jay Gallegos told BNamericas previously that Panama was on the list of potential new markets.

La Patrona would be built in La Pava, Olá district, and boast 18 turbines, production from which would be dispatched via a substation to the national grid along an 8.35km, 230kV transmission line. Construction would take 12-18 months.

Average wind speed in the area (pictured) at 90m is 5.6m/second.

In addition, the ministry received an EIS from Oro Solar, established by local firm Istmo Solar, for the 9.99MW Parita Solar project in Herrera province.
