Peru approves National Strategy on Climate Change for 2050
The following is a machine translation of a Minam release
Lima.- The Government, through the Ministry of the Environment (Minam), approved the National Strategy on Climate Change (ENCC) for the year 2050, which will be the main comprehensive management instrument to guide and facilitate the State's action in the next 25 years in the face of the impacts of this global threat; this in accordance with Supreme Decree No. 012-2024-MINAM published in the newspaper El Peruano.
This environmental management policy considers that public entities and government sectors are capable of carrying out management that allows them to deliver products/goods and services to citizens through efficient, economic and quality processes. In this sense, approaches have been incorporated that will contribute to sustainable development for our society, based on a low-carbon economy.
ENCC has a vision for 2050 to achieve carbon neutrality and adaptation to climate change, preserving our ecosystems, livelihoods and productive systems, fulfilling our commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
To achieve this, alternative solutions are proposed that promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to achieve net zero emissions goals with a balance between emissions and absorptions, through proper management of forests to reduce deforestation and degradation.
The aim is also to maximise the use of renewable energy, implement an emission-free transport system and a circular economy with efficient use of resources, and create an industry with low-carbon technologies.
Participatory process
The Strategy is the result of a broad participatory process led by Minam, convening all state and non-state actors, in order to guarantee and implement the principles of transparency and participation, in accordance with the provisions of the Framework Law on Climate Change and its Regulations.
This reflects the Peruvian State's firm commitment to working hand in hand with citizens to address the climate crisis.
