Peru breaks hydrocarbons exploration drilling drought

Peru has recorded the drilling of its first upstream hydrocarbon exploration wells following a more than two-year absence of such activity.

Information from hydrocarbons licensing authority Perupetro reveals that two wells were spudded in the first half, one each by Unna Energia and Olympic at respective northwest onshore blocks IV and XIII.

The 13843XD well at block IV reached a final depth of 4,119ft and the EXP-200X well at block XIII reached a final depth of 6,887ft.

There was no 2D or 3D seismic registered in the first six months of 2024, the data shows.

Meanwhile, one confirmation well was drilled in H1 at northern onshore block XXIII by Upland Oil and Gas. The last such well was drilled in 2019, when three were spudded.

And 24 development wells were drilled in January-June, 22 by Unna across blocks III and IV and two by PetroTal at block 95, the latter of which is Peru’s principal crude producer.

Last year, 41 development wells were drilled.
