Peru launches call for Paita port access study
The Peruvian government launched a tender to carry out a pre-investment study to improve access to the northern port of Paita.
Interested companies can submit bids until November 4, the transport and communications ministry (MTC) said in a statement. Companies will have until November 3 to register and the tender for the study will take place on November 8.
The port is in Piura region and the aim is to ease traffic congestion around the terminal, which has capacity to handle 3Mt/y. It will include areas for trucks to park and improvements to access roads.
"The tender submission method is electronic, through the state electronic contracting system (SEACE) platform. This project is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the port area and the urban area under its influence, improving the quality of freight transport service," the ministry said.
The estimated cost of the project and the study is still under evaluation.
BACKGROUND
The Paita access project was one of those prioritized by the MTC when the government requested a list of the main public works plans for 2019 and 2022.
Of the three logistics-port projects of the MTC – creation of truck centers (Lima, La Libertad and Arequipa), Paita access and Callao access – only the Callao one was prioritized by the government but construction has not yet begun.
In the case of Paita, the MTC had intended to start construction of the project in 2020 – as announced in February 2020 – but it did not go ahead.
According to the ministry, the new port access area will be built on a 20ha site.
