Peru MVNOs must give notice before exiting market
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) must give customers two months' notice if they plan to withdraw from the market, Peruvian telecoms regulator Osiptel said in response to rumors that Virgin Mobile may be considering pulling out, just a year after its debut.
Citing Osiptel sources, local daily El Comercio reported that transport and communications ministry (MTC) norms specify that operators must give customers 60 days' notice and inform them of number portability options.
Virgin has reportedly struggled to make a dent in the highly competitive Peruvian mobile market. Last week, Osiptel granted newcomer MVNO Dolphin Telecom approval to use Entel's network.
In the first quarter of this year, Peru's mobile market was led by Telefónica with a 43% share, Claro (32.6%), Bitel (10.8% and Virgin Mobile (0.15%).
