Peru power generator Kallpa’s renewable energy plans receive boost

Peru’s energy and mines ministry approved reference terms to draft the semi-detailed EIS for Kallpa Generación’s Norteño wind project.

Kallpa, one of the country’s top power producers, plans to build the plant in Chiclayo province, Lambayeque region.

Information from the ministry’s energy environmental affairs office shows that Norteño would boast 35 turbines for a combined 200MW, versus the previous 23 turbines and a combined 131MW in the temporary concession granted earlier this year.

The project includes the Norteño substation which would connect to the national grid at the Reque substation via a 12km, 220kV transmission line.

Inkia-controlled Kallpa’s development pipeline includes wind projects Tanaka (403MW), Los Vientos (365MW) and Cherrepe (143MW), and solar projects Sunny (345MW) and Ocoña (335MW).

In September, Kallpa was Peru’s principal electricity producer, accounting for 21% of the 54,923GWh generated in the month. The company has capacity of 1,233MW of natural gas-fired generation and 969MW of hydro.

Meanwhile, the ministry accepted a request from Ignis-controlled Zapote to withdraw the 164MW Zapote wind project from the environmental impact review process.

The reason for the developer’s decision was not disclosed.
