Peru power watch: Demand guidance, dispatch workgroup, grid boost
Peruvian power grid administrator COES’s latest medium-term report shows that energy and capacity demand this year is forecast to grow 4% and 1.8%, respectively, to 63,248GWh and 8,298MW.
Energy and capacity demand growth in 2026 is projected to increase 3.8% and 3.3% to 65,652GWh and 8,568MW.
Dispatch workgroup
The energy and mines ministry (Minem) established a multisector workgroup to draft short term proposals to guarantee reliable power supply to the Iquitos isolated grid in the northern Amazon.
The workgroup will be in place for 180 days and comprise power officials from the ministry and representatives from energy and mining investment regulator Osinergmin and COES.
Electro Oriente distributes power to Iquitos with electricity supplied by Genrent del Perú which operates an 80MW heavy fuel oil-fired plant.
There are plans to connect the isolated system with the national grid, after which the thermal plant would migrate to cold reserve capacity.

Grid boost
Electro Oriente put into operation the 52.4km, 60kV Pongo de Caynarachi-Yurimaguas transmission line and associated substations in the central Amazon region of Loreto.
The project cost 40.8mn soles (US$10.8mn) and will benefit over 160,000 residents.
