Peru prepares more than US$170mn in flood prevention works

The Peruvian government is preparing 661mn soles (US$178mn) in flood prevention works, such as storm drainage, in Piura region.
The northwest area is usually affected by heavy rains in the first months of the year.
According to a report sent to environmental certification service Senace, the works to capture and channel water will benefit the cities of Sullana and Bellavista, which together have a population of more than 260,000.
The report, known as the second modification of the environmental management instrument, states the works will focus on reinforcing the Cola de Alacrán ravine. They include the construction of retention dams and walls, the installation of drains and fills, and basic earthmoving and transportation.
Consulting firm Atomo presented the report on behalf of infrastructure authority ANIN, which absorbed the functions of reconstruction authority ARCC after the natural disasters of 2023. The report can be downloaded from the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen.
The works around the Cola de Alacrán are divided into two sectors – sector 3 and sector 4. Sector 3 will require 261mn soles and sector 4 approximately 400mn soles.
According to the documents, the company in charge of construction will be Argentina’s Benito Roggio e Hijos. Last year, Benito Roggio – which works in the water and sanitation, mining, transportation and electric power industries – was part of a consortium awarded the Huancayo Huancavelica rail project.
According to the tentative schedule, the flood prevention works will begin in the second half of this year and will last for 3.5 years. The projected lifespan of the works is 25 years.
