Peru prepares US$50mn irrigation infrastructure project

The Pasto Grande regional special project (PERPG), an autonomous entity of Moquegua’s regional government, is preparing a 191mn-sol (US$51.3mn) irrigation infrastructure project in Peru’s south.

PERPG wants to build an irrigation dam in the Lomas de Ilo area, along with a catchment and pumping system.

According to the terms of reference submitted to environmental certification service for sustainable investments Senace, an electrical system will also be included for transporting water from the Chilota river-Pasto Grande canal with a flow rate of 450l/s.

PERPG proposes a modification of the detailed environmental impact study of the Lomas de Ilo-Moquegua agricultural area, which includes other irrigation works.

The project seeks "to expand the agricultural frontier by 1500ha by incorporating new productive areas, guaranteeing the supply of water for irrigation and promoting the socioeconomic development of the region," the report said.

A first version of the report is under evaluation, but the timetable must still be defined along with the total number of workers required.

Works will also include access roads and worker accommodation.
