Peru qualifies groups for power transmission tender

Two companies qualified in a power transmission call as part of a reassignment process in Peru to fast-track US$78mn in projects.

The qualifiers are Alupar Perú and Consorcio Eléctrico de Villacurí, energy and mines ministry information shows.

The qualification is for three out of a total 14 projects: substations Maravilla and Puno Sur, and line Runatullo-Satipo.

The process was launched in January, and selection is scheduled for this month.

The government established the mechanism in 2021 to reactivate complementary transmission system projects which are part of transmission investment plans previously approved by energy and mining investment regulator Osinergmin.

Meanwhile, the ministry declared a "grave" shortfall of the Bagua-Jaén-San Ignacio system due to the lack of production and/or transport capacity until the completion of an expansion of Electro Oriente’s Jaén substation in Cajamarca region that is expected by March 30, 2025.

An Osinergmin report concluded that a substation transformer experienced an overload of 114% this year, and there exists concern of the possible impact on growth in 2024-25, the ministry said.

Through a decree, the ministry set required additional capacity at 12MW and tasked Electro Oriente with carrying out the required procurement and/or work to overcome the supply impasse.
