Press release from ComexPeru

Lima .- Between January and May 2024, mining exports to APEC member economies totaled US$ 12,237 million, a growth of 3.9% compared to the same period in 2023, according to Sunat data reported by ComexPerú.

This performance was in line with that recorded in 2023, when mining exports accounted for 70% of the total exported to the APEC bloc, reflecting a growth of 13.7% compared to 2022. Copper mineral shipments contributed to this dynamism, accounting for 58.8% of total shipments (US$ 18,148 million), with growth in value and volume of 17.4% and 18%, respectively.

In the first five months of this year, China maintained its position as the main destination for mining exports to the APEC bloc, accumulating 68% of the total exports (US$ 8,335 million) and registering a year-on-year increase of 6.5%. This dynamism was strengthened by shipments of copper minerals and concentrates, which totaled US$ 5,757 million (+0.7%).

"The dynamism of our mining exports is driven mainly by the demand of our main trading partners, which are part of the APEC bloc and require these inputs for their industries," said ComexPerú.

The union added that “Peru, by being part of the APEC forum, finds a variety of opportunities, including the promotion of investments, important for the mining sector.” “Therefore, it is vital to regain business confidence and thus take advantage of the benefits of hosting, for the third time, meetings of the largest economies in the world,” it noted.

Main regions of origin

In 2023, according to data from Sunat, Arequipa, Moquegua, Áncash, Apurímac and Ica were the departments that contributed most to the dynamism of mining exports to APEC. The five departments accounted for 63.3% of what was exported that year.

Mining exports from Arequipa totaled US$ 4,501 million in 2023, an increase of 0.9% compared to 2022. Copper minerals and concentrates were the main exported product, representing 63.5% of the department's exports (US$ 2,856 million), although they showed a decrease of 9.7%.

Moquegua recorded shipments of US$ 4,083 million, reflecting a growth of 57.8%, mainly driven by copper in the form of concentrated mineral (US$ 2,239 million) and cathodes and sections (US$ 1,335 million). It was followed by Ancash, with an export value of US$ 3,966 million (-11.4%), Apurímac (US$ 3,508 million, +73.8%) and Ica (US$ 3,496 million, +14.5%).
