The value of public-private partnership (PPP) projects in communications surpassed US$3.7bn in Peru in 2002-23 period, putting it ahead of sectors such as irrigation, sanitation and health.
The figures are included in the statistical yearbook just released by Peru's investment promotion agency ProInversión.
The document, which can be accessed in the Documents box at the top right of this page, provides macroeconomic data, general market statistics, and information on foreign and private investments in the country.
In terms of PPP values, communications is ranked behind transportation (US$11.2bn), power (US$9.3bn) and is close to oil & gas (US$3.9bn) for 2002-23.
Of the PPPs in communications, 86% were greenfield projects or new projects developed from the ground up, and 14% were brownfield projects developed on existing facilities or structures.
According to ProInversión, 13 communications PPPs remained in force at the end of 2023 and the total cost of investment for communication assets was US$640mn last year.
FOREIGN INVESTMENT
When considering foreign direct investment (FDI) last year, the communications sector was ahead of energy, receiving US$5.5bn in 2023, compared with US$3.5bn for energy.
The mining sector leads the way in foreign capital attraction, over US$6.9bn in 2023, followed by the financial industry (US$6.7bn).
The three countries that invested the most in communications in Peru last year were Spain, with over US$3bn, Chile (US$1.6bn) and Mexico (US$407mn).
Some of the leading players in Peru's telecoms sector are from those countries: Telefónica (Spain), Entel and GTD (Chile) and América Móvil (Mexico).
