Peru’s Kallpa doubling down on renewable energy with 400MW project

Kallpa Generación, Peru’s top power producer, has added a project to its renewable energy development pipeline.

The proposed plant is the 403MW Tanaka wind farm and associated 88km, 220kV line and substation in the regions of Arequipa and Ica.

The company has just secured energy and mines ministry approval for the citizen participation plan for the 65-turbine facility, ministry information shows.

Kallpa presented the plan in August and pledged to conduct five workshops before drafting the semi-detailed environmental impact study (EIS), and five workshops and public hearings each during the evaluation of the EIS.

Tanaka’s direct and indirect influence areas cover 1,445ha and 3,124ha, respectively, and the project does not overlap with any buffer zone and/or protected natural area, rural community or indigenous reserve, the information highlights.

In recent days, the ministry approved a modification to Kallpa’s EIS for the Sunny solar project that increases capacity to 345MW from 204MW, and earlier this year, the generator picked up a temporary concession for the 131MW Norteño wind project.

Kallpa’s renewable energy portfolio also includes solar project Ocoña (335MW) and wind projects Cherrepe (143MW) and Los Vientos (365MW)

In August, Kallpa was Peru’s principal electricity producer, accounting for 22% of the 5,057GWh generated in the month. The Inkia Energy subsidiary boasts 1,233MW of natural gas-fired generation and 969MW of hydro.

And in June, Kallpa was one of the winners in Enel Distribución Perú’s call to supply electricity to regulated users in 2027-30.
