Peru's Marcona port concessionaire prepares project modifications

Bnamericas

The Marcona port terminal, a US$405mn project south of Peruvian capital Lima, is preparing improvements to its detailed engineering involving US$12mn.

Terminal Portuario Jinzhao Perú, a concessionaire of China's Zhongrong Xinda Group, submitted a second technical support report (ITS) to environmental certifier Senace for approval.

The ITS was produced by consulting firm Tema Litoclean and can be downloaded in the Documents box in the upper-right corner of the screen. According to the report, most of the modifications are "minimal." The company submitted its first ITS in 2024, which was approved in September.

"These largely include relocations, expansions and reductions in the area where some components are located, the addition of new auxiliary components, as well as changes to the construction process for the pier and the access bridge," the second ITS states.

Among the areas that will undergo adjustments are Antepuerto 3, the entrance and exit gate, the general control building, the diesel refueling station and the electrical substation. Since these are minor adjustments, the changes are not expected to generate significant environmental impacts.

The Marcona terminal is focused on exports of minerals, primarily iron ore, and will be built in three stages. It is expected to be able to handle up to 34Mt/y and have a useful life of 30 years. According to the ITS, construction will take 30 months.

The project is currently in the design and planning stages. Construction of the first phase is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed before 2029.
