January 22, 2025, Lima: Peru joins countries around the world that are promoting GSMA Open Gateway, the mobile industry initiative designed to simplify the creation of digital applications and services for developers. At an event convened by the GSMA, leader of the project, operators Claro, Entel and Telefónica presented the progress of their solutions within the framework of the initiative. Following the global trend, this first phase focuses on anti-fraud tools and the protection of users' digital identity.

The GSMA Open Gateway is a standard through which mobile operators make available to developers a range of network functions that are used to build applications and services. By uniting operators from around the world, the initiative facilitates the design of digital products capable of working seamlessly across all devices, regardless of country or operator. This is done through single access points, APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), which act as gateways to information about network capabilities. The APIs are available through the CAMARA repository, an open source project of the GSMA and the Linux Foundation.

The first four APIs developed in Peru are SIM SWAP, which allows for verification of SIM card replacement on a mobile line; Device Location, which provides information on the location of a device; Device Status, which reveals whether a device is roaming and in which country; and Number verification, which verifies that a phone number is associated with a certain device. By providing key information on mobile devices and lines in real time, these APIs help in the detection and prevention of fraud in transactions, which positions the financial industry as the first sector to benefit. In addition to representing a new business opportunity in the B2B (business to business) segment for operators, the GSMA Open Gateway helps offer a more secure mobile environment to end users.

At Claro Perú, we believe that collaborative work is essential to solve the various problems that arise in the telecommunications sector in search of solutions for people, and that is what GSMA Open Gateway is all about, which provides various benefits to users to combat problems such as online fraud, through the development of applications that adapt to the needs of the market and that are based on previous experiences in Peru and the world, which aim to find effective solutions. Our commitment is to continue along this path, in favor of all users,” said Mariano Orihuela, Director of Corporate Market, Claro Perú.

At Entel, we work to foster a digital ecosystem that promotes innovation and enhances connectivity for everyone. Initiatives such as GSMA Open Gateway are an example of the impact that can be achieved when we work together to develop solutions that benefit more Peruvians. Today, our commitment to bringing the infinite possibilities that technology offers to improve people's lives is strengthened and, without a doubt, we will continue to invest in initiatives that ensure a safe and quality digital experience for all our customers,” said Jorge Enrique Linares, Wholesale VAS Business Manager, Entel Perú.

GSMA Open Gateway is a global initiative of the telco sector led by the GSMA, which aims to transform communications networks into future-ready platforms. In Peru, we continue to collaborate with the rest of the operators in the development of GSMA Open Gateway, a concept that Telefónica has promoted since the beginning of 2023. We are aligned with the development plan that the country is carrying out, with an initial focus on launching anti-fraud and online identity services,” added Sergio Vera, Marketing and B2B Product Manager, Telefónica del Perú.

“The GSMA Open Gateway is making strong progress in Latin America, with at least one operator in each country already integrated into the initiative, reaching more than 90% of mobile users in the region,” said Alejandro Adamowicz, Director of Technology and Strategy for Latin America, GSMA. “With today’s announcement, the mobile industry in Peru is opening the way to new opportunities for collaboration in the digital ecosystem and reaffirming its commitment to applying innovation to contribute to the security of mobile users,” he concluded.

Since its launch at MWC Barcelona 2023, more than 69 mobile operator groups, representing 280 networks and over 75% of global accesses, are now part of the GSMA Open Gateway, along with the world's leading technology companies. In Latin America, Brazil, Argentina and Chile have already presented their first API portfolio and new markets will be added in 2025.
