Political Risk Report: The Impacts of Crime in Latin America
This month's report and podcast are focused on a key aspect of doing business in Latin America, and any other part of the world for that matter: security.
Crime is at the heart of many of the issues and choices affecting everyday people in the region, from a fuel shortage in Mexico to the election of Jair Bolsonaro as president of Brazil by promising to get tough on criminals. It also increases the costs of operating a business and eats into a country's GDP.
As always, we also go over the most relevant political and regulatory developments, as well as investment announcements, that have taken place over the last month in the region's main economies.
In our accompanying podcast available January 22, we talk about the region's crime epidemic with the head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's Latin American section, Antonio Mazzitelli, and Katherine Aguirre, a researcher at Brazil-based regional think tank Igarapé Institute.
