Porto Central and Equinor have signed a contract for oil transshipment operations at the port complex's liquid bulk terminal.
Driven by the growth of oil production in Brazil, the demand for infrastructure for ship-to-ship oil transfer operations (known as “Ship-to-Ship” or “STS”) is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.
Expected to begin operations by December 2027, Porto Central is building a modern infrastructure with a licensed capacity for up to 1.2 million barrels of oil per day in Phase 1. The liquid bulk terminal, which began construction in December 2024, will allow the docking of large vessels, such as Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs).
This structure will provide economies of scale and reduction of logistics costs, in addition to greater predictability and reliability in operations, resulting in greater efficiency and safety for customers.
In addition to serving oil transshipment operations, Porto Central is being designed as a diversified energy hub. The complex will have infrastructure for tanking and handling other liquid bulk cargo, as well as areas dedicated to the development of renewable energy projects, expanding its relevance as a strategic point for different segments of the energy sector in Brazil and in the global market.
About Equinor
Equinor is a global energy company headquartered in Norway and has been present in Brazil for over 20 years. In Brazil, the company has a solid and diversified oil and natural gas portfolio and has been expanding its investments in renewable energy.
