Procurement begins for US$80mn Dominican Rep hydro project

Dominican Republic state hydroelectric company Egehid issued a call to build the La Gina multipurpose hydro project.

The dam is planned for the upper basin of the Bani river in Peravia province and will cost an estimated 4.69 billion pesos (US$80 million).

“Studies carried out by the University of Colorado identified a deficit in the irrigation system of the Juan Caballero canal due to the operations of the Valdesia reservoir, whose deficit has increased due to the increase in land for agricultural use,” Egehid highlights.

“The correction of this imbalance constitutes one of the main objectives of the project, as well as the supply of drinking water and electricity generation,” it adds.

The company also points to a water supply shortfall after the transfer of water from the Nizao river – used as a potable water source for capital Santo Domingo that previously was used for Peravia province.

Offers for the 45-month contract are due July 25, according to bidding information available here.

Contract signing would take place in October if the project is awarded.
