Procurement on tap for revamp of Honduras’ largest power plant
Honduras’ state power company Enee is expected to shortly begin calls to modernize the country’s largest generation plant, the 300MW Francisco Morazán hydro.
Procurement will fall under an US$18mn loan package approved by IDB for the US$36.8mn project to overhaul the plant, also known as El Cajón (pictured), which entered service in 1986.
The revamp includes the migration to new state of the art digital monitoring and control systems, replacement of aging equipment, and the refit and expansion of the substation, among other works.
Another component will evaluate a potential increase in generation capacity that will include geological and geotechnical studies, electromechanical design, and an analysis of the interconnection to the national and regional grids.
BNamericas previously reported that Enee head Erick Tejada announced plans for a fifth turbine at Francisco Morazán. The installation of a floating solar array has also been pitched.
In 2022, Francisco Morazán accounted for 14% of the Central American nation’s net electricity production, and represented 10% of installed capacity, Enee data shows.
