Prosecutors to hold public hearing on impact of mining in Brazil's Goiás state
Brazilian prosecutors will hold a public hearing on May 23 on the potential negative impacts of mining in the Catalão and Ouvidor municipalities of Goiás state.
"According to reports collected in a civil investigation being carried out by the MPF [federal prosecutor’s office], mining by the companies CMOC Brasil and Mosaic Fertilizantes could be causing significant environmental impacts and harming rural and urban communities in the region," prosecutors said in a statement.
According to prosecutors, "there are a large number of family farmers whose activities are being compromised by the expansion of mining." Meanwhile, in urban areas, there are many reports of atmospheric pollution, compromising public health, in addition to water insecurity for the population, it added.
According to CMOC Brasil, a subsidiary of China Molybdenum, the firm extracts niobium from its mine in Catalão and processes it at its plant in Ouvidor to produce ferroniobium alloys.
Mosaic operates a phosphate mine in Catalão.
