Bnamericas
Honduras' Puerto Cortes municipality will open a landfill on January 25, 2004 to dispose of and treat the city's 40 t/d of waste, the Tiempo Digital reported. The landfill will be located some 7km from the city and is expected to collect 3M cu. m of solid waste over its useful life of 17 years. Waste is currently disposed of in a dump, from which liquid waste causes ground contamination and gas emissions. The landfill was funded by the municipality and counterpart funds from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Puerto Cortes has 41,000 residents.
