Puerto Rico 2025 power grid improvement budget tops US$1.4bn
Puerto Rican power transmission and distribution operator Luma Energy’s 2025 improvement portfolio spending profile totals US$1.40bn.
The figure is part of the company’s proposed budget for next year submitted to the island’s energy regulator PREB.
The bulk of improvement funds would be allocated to programs related to customer experience (e.g. advanced metering infrastructure), enabling (e.g. asset data integrity) and distribution (e.g. automation devices).
In its proposal, Luma, which serves 1.5mn customers, highlights, however, that it “continues to operate the T&D system in a financially constrained environment, hindering the effectiveness and speed at which Luma can deliver progress to its customers.”

Meanwhile, Genera, which manages power authority PREPA’s 4,693MW thermo park, filed a request with PREB for an US$18.9mn vehicle fleet and equipment procurement plan.
Genera states that its fleet is “severely outdated and non-functional,” which stymies its operational capability.
Luma and Genera’s requests are available in the Documents box in the top right corner.
