Puerto Rico announces temporary reduction of more than 19% in PREPA invoice for the month of June
This Office of the Governor release was published using machine translation.
(May 30, 2020 - La Fortaleza, San Juan) - Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced announced today that the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (NEPR) approved a rate adjustment on the June bill from the Electric Power Authority ( PREPA), which will take effect on Monday, June 1, and will result in financial relief for subscribers of the public corporation.
"After the fall in oil prices as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, I ordered the executive director of the Electric Power Authority, José Ortiz, to take all the necessary steps so that any savings that the public corporation had on a monthly basis, it would translate into savings for our people. In compliance with the foregoing, the Authority submitted to the Energy Bureau a request for adjustments to the Adjustment Clause for Fuel Purchase and the Adjustment Clause for Energy Purchase to achieve a rate reduction, "explained the first president.
"As reported today by the Energy Bureau in Resolution and Order NEPR MI-2020-0001, after evaluating the information presented by PREPA related to the corporation's expenses and savings for the last quarter, an immediate reduction of 4.1337 ¢ was approved / kWh on the electricity bill for June 2020. This amounts to a reduction of 21.59 ¢ / kWh from the current rate to 17.46 ¢ / kWh (19.13%) effective as soon as this coming Monday, "added Vázquez Garced .
Regarding savings in dollars and cents, as an example, an unsubsidized residential customer, whose monthly consumption is 450 kWh, will see a reduction of $ 18.60 on their June bill. Your bill would drop from $ 97.18 to $ 78.58.
Similarly, an unsubsidized residential customer whose monthly consumption is 1,200 kWh will see a reduction of $ 49.60 on their June bill. This would drop from $ 259.16 to $ 209.56.
This determination of the NEPR, a component of the Public Service Regulatory Board (JRSP), also generates a positive economic impact for Puerto Rico, estimated at over $ 55 million for June.
"I thank the president and associate commissioners of the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau, whom our administration has recognized, not only for fulfilling their ministerial duty to evaluate PREPA's proposals and plans fairly, but also for giving the extra mile to identify factors that would allow even greater relief for subscribers, I am confident that in subsequent months similar reductions will be evaluated for the benefit of the people, "said Vázquez Garced.
"We will continue with more initiatives to reduce energy costs. My administration is an ally of solar and wind energy in Puerto Rico. For this reason, we have signed 23 contracts for renewable energy projects that have been on hold since 2007," he added.
