Puerto Rico energy storage plans advance with new calls

Procurement has begun in Puerto Rico to install battery energy storage systems (BESS) at three thermoelectric plants.

The BESS are for the Aguirre, Costa Sur and Vega Baja plants where 158MW, 30MW and 49MW will be deployed, respectively.

Genera, which operates the island’s legacy thermoelectric plants, issued the calls as part of its 430MW BESS program, with offers due next month. Information is available by registering here.

The company already has bidding underway for a 52MW BESS project at the Cambalache plant.

BESS are also part of the local government’s renewable energy and storage process.
