Puerto Rico eyeing January launch for energy storage work
Genera, which operates Puerto Rico’s legacy thermoelectric plants, plans to issue requests for proposals in January for its 430MW battery energy storage system (BESS) program.
The calls will be to support BESS installation at Aguirre (158MW), Costa Sur (30MW), Vega Baja (49MW) and Yabucoa (40MW), company information shows.
Last month, Genera announced the selection of Tesla for the US$760mn federally funded program, which includes Palo Seco (101MW) and Cambalache (52MW).
An RFP for general works services is already underway for Cambalache.

BESSs are featured in the recently launched tranche 4 of the island’s renewable energy and storage procurement process, with local energy regulator NEPR having deemed such systems of urgent importance.
“BESSs can provide a rapid spinning reserve, frequency regulation, voltage control, and other ancillary services required to keep continuity of the service under emergency events and different scenarios that can put the system at risk of load shedding and blackouts,” according to Genera.
