Puerto Rico releases 2025-44 energy roadmap forecast
Puerto Rico energy regulator NEPR has disclosed an updated presentation for the 2025-44 integrated resource plan (IRP).
Luma Energy, which took over operations from state utility PREPA for 15 years in June 2021, filed the roadmap which is designed to help determine the necessary changes to migrate the power system to a resilient and renewable energy grid.
IRP modeling forecasts that the island’s total net energy requirement and load demand in 2025 will hit 16,206GWh and 2,659MW, and 13,256GWh and 1,895MW in 2044.
The projections factor in energy efficiency, distributed solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), combined heat and power, and electric vehicle charging.
The next steps will focus on transmission and distribution analysis with additional technical conferences scheduled for December and January. The IRP filing date target is June.
NEPR also released a BESS project update from Genera, which this year began management of PREPA’s 4,693MW thermal park.
The project envisions the installation of 430MW to provide four hours equivalent of 1,720MWh.
