Puerto Rico starts US$200mn Mayagüez port modernization

Puerto Rico started upgrade and expansion works for US$200mn at Mayagüez port.
Works will take around 30 months and are financed by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“This is the largest project that has been developed in this region in the last few years, and it will turn Mayagüez port into the third largest port in Puerto Rico, just after San Juan and Ponce ports. In fact, this is the largest project executed by [development company] Pridco in its history,” governor Pedro Pierluisi was quoted as saying by local media.
The project also comprises the demolition of old fish factories and the rehabilitation of the 1,360ft pier. CSA Architects & Engineers and 3MG will supervise and design the project, while contractor Toledo Engineering will carry out the demolitions.
Local media reported economic development secretary Manuel Cidre as saying that “the demolition of the buildings in the port and the restoration of the infrastructure, which will be followed by the pier refurbishment and the removal of a sunken ship, will be the start of a world-class pier, which will be able to receive cruise ships and will also be an important docking place for small ships.”
