Quito metro to start operations in December

A consortium comprising French company Transdev and Metro de Medellín signed the contract with Metro de Quito to operate the capital’s US$2bn line No. 1.

During the signing ceremony, Quito’s mayor, Santiago Guarderas, said operations will start December 21.

The IDB, World Bank and Latin American development bank CAF financed the 23km line, which is the most important transport infrastructure project in Ecuador and links Quitumbe and El Labrador.

A 5.4km, US$500mn extension between El Labrador and La Ofelia is expected to receive authorization next year.
