Quito mulls extension of metro line No. 1

Quito will invite leaders from various sectors to discuss ways to expand the US$2bn metro line No. 1.

“Evidently it is an expensive work and needs financing. If we make an effort, it can be done just as the first line was done, with resources from the city, loans that are also assumed by the city and resources from the national government,” mayor Pabel Muñoz said during his weekly report.

The 22.6km line was financed by the IDB, the World Bank and Latin American development bank CAF. Operations started on December 1.

Muñoz wants to finish the expansion before his term ends in 2027. He proposes two stages: the first focused on the Ofelia sector, and the second between Ofelia and Calderón.

Feasibility studies for the expansion are finished. Definitive investment figures have not been revealed, but it is estimated that the previous city administration invested around US$500mn.

Operator Quito Metro is a consortium comprising French company Transdev and Colombia's Metro de Medellín.
