Rains damage road infrastructure in Honduras

Bnamericas

Rains damaged at least two bridges and two highways in Honduras’ northwestern department of Santa Rosa de Copán, local media reported.

The rains are expected to continue until Thursday and have caused floods in the Copán Ruinas area where houses were damaged, the sewage system was overloaded, and ground communications with small communities were cut off.

According to the deputy mayor of Copán municipality, Susana Castejón, who was quoted by CNN on Tuesday, 51 communities in the department were isolated after two bridges were damaged and were at risk of collapsing.

Two highways connecting the Sesesmil and La Pintada sectors were also damaged, daily El Heraldo reported.

It is estimated that 80-100mm of rain fell on Saturday night.

“We are worried because it was unexpected. We are affected year after year, but what happened in the last few hours is very concerning,” said Castejón in the same report.
