Recope modernizes the main fuel sales terminal after 27 years

This Recope release was published using machine translation.

The Recope terminal in La Garita, Alajuela, is vital for the development and mobility of Costa Rica. Aware of this importance, the technological equipment that allows fuel loading in the tankers that arrive at said terminal was modernized.

The objective is not only to offer a better service, but to ensure the supply of fuel for the country, since the equipment they had had been in operation since 1997 and, due to their age, they lacked spare parts on the market that would guarantee their operation against a possible damage.

The La Garita terminal is essential for the country. In this Administration, we detected a notable neglect in the infrastructure of the National Fuel System and decided to act. With the Rescue Plan, we prioritize, among many other projects, the investment in the cargo control units and the control platform of the fuel loading stations in that terminal ,” explained Karla Montero, president of Recope.

The importance of this terminal is reflected in the numbers. In 2023, 984.6 million liters of fuel were sold there, which represents 26.03% of Recope's total sales in Costa Rica. In addition, that is where 36.34% of super, regular and diesel gasoline is sold for national consumption.

What does equipment modernization consist of?

The modernization includes modern and reliable units and platforms, which improve sales security, streamline operations and minimize human error. Fiber optic communication has also been improved and monitoring has been increased for better control of the fuel delivery process.

Luis Sánchez, Operations Manager of Recope, explained that “ a new point of sale for Jet A-1 aviation fuel was also implemented, with greater capacity, eliminating waiting times and reducing loading times. These changes directly benefit our customers and reflect our commitment to the country's energy security .”

The modernization has been well received by transporters, who celebrate the improvement in infrastructure.

Alexánder Davis, manager of Technical Services and Innovation, specified that the resources for this project came from Recope's own funds, through a carefully planned investment plan.

We evaluate, detect and prioritize the company's maintenance and investment needs to guarantee the best service to our customers. This is a reflection that Recope is assuming the maintenance of equipment and facilities in a sensible and orderly manner to avoid future inconveniences ,” said Davis.

The president of Recope, Karla Montero, stressed that the Company will continue investing in all those projects that ensure the supply of fuels efficiently. “ These projects strengthen us and lead us to become a model company within the Costa Rican public sector ,” he concluded.
