Regional alumina production slips in March
South American production of alumina slipped 2.5% year-on-year in March to 1.05Mt, the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) reported.
IAI's South America figures are for Brazil, Jamaica, Suriname and Venezuela, the region's only producers of alumina, the key input for aluminum.
Global alumina production totaled 4.59Mt in March, down from 9.64Mt in the same month 2015, IAI said. The difference is due to China's pending figures for the month. The Asian country is the world's largest alumina producer, with about 50% of global market share.
South America's output in the last 12 months was 12.9Mt.
In Brazil, most important alumina producers are Alcan, Alcoa, BHP Billiton, Novelis, Norsk Hydro and CBA. The country is the region's largest alumina producer.
