Mexican space program

The newly established Mexican digital transformation and telecommunications agency (ATDT), which will take over some functions of current regulator IFT, launched a space program aimed at strengthening space infrastructure, national security and digital inclusion.

ATDT will also integrate space agency AEMand satellite system Mexsat. 

President Claudia Sheinbaum previously announced that Mexico will launch a geostationary telecoms satellite to replace and complement the current services provided by the Bicentenario satellite.

New CRC head

Officials of Colombian regulator CRC appointed Claudia Ximena Bustamante Osorio as the entity’s new leader. 

Bustamante previously served in leadership positions in CRC’s innovation, government relations and development and research areas. She led strategic initiatives such as quality crowdsourcing, infrastructure deployment and the regulatory sandbox. 

In 2024, she assumed the position of expert commissioner.

Speed test

Chile launched a trial phase of an application to allows users to measure their fixed internet speed.

“This application will be officially recognized as a tool to demand compensation in the event that the contracted services are not being delivered in the agreed manner,” telecoms undersecretary Claudio Araya said in a press release.

In November 2022, MedUX and Microsystem won the tender launched by independent technical agency OTI, which is in charge of the internet measurement network and monitoring the services provided. 

Public consultations

Honduran regulator Conatel launched a public consultation on rates and fees for 2025Comments may be submitted through February 5, and more information is available here.

Chile’s Subtel, meanwhile, seeks comment on a shared infrastructure policy to help reduce the digital divide. The consultation is open through March 20 and the relevant documents can be accessed here
