Fortis reported second quarter net earnings from its Caribbean-regulated power utilities of Cdn$8mn (US$7mn), up 33.3% from 2Q13, as well as increased production from its non-regulated hydroelectric asset in Belize, due to higher rainfall.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) granted Financiera de Occidente a US$669,000 partial guarantee to support company Comercializadora de Energía para el Desarrollo's small hydroelectric project in Guatemala.

BCIE approved the guarantee as part of its renewable energy investment promotion program Areca.

Uruguayan state power company UTE put into service 500kV transmission substation Punta del Tigre (PT5), in San José department.

PT5, together with the Las Brujas substation and associated lines, allows connection of the Punta del Tigre thermoelectric plant to the national grid, UTE said in a statement.
