Roundup: Digicel CANTO, Axtel, mobile portability in Peru

Digicel's head of telecoms public policy Julian Wilkins was voted chairman of the CANTO board of directors at the 31st Annual General Meeting, held in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Wilkins has represented Digicel at CANTO for seven years and has actively chaired two working committees in the past. He joined Digicel Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 as operations and maintenance manager, and transferred to Digicel Group in 2008.

BTC's CEO Leon Williams has been elected as vice chairman, while TELEM St. Maarten's Helma Etnel will be treasurer of the board.

Axtel has been named a member of the sustainable index of the Mexican stock market (BMV) for the third consecutive year, the company announced in a press release.

The operator was chosen by BMV, Universidad Anáhuac and Ecovalores, for its commitment to the environment, social responsibility and corporate governance, as well as the fact that it fulfills the criteria on the percentage of circulating shares, traded market value and minimum liquidity.

The company will be on the sustainable index between February 1 this year and January 31, 2016.

During the second half of 2014, Movistar Peru was the company that lost most users to portability, ending the year with a net loss of 37,774 customers. Claro was second, losing a net 36,874 clients.

A report by telecom regulator Osiptel reported that a total 166,847 users switched providers between July and December.

Entel Perú gained 87,078 new mobile users, making it the company that received the most new clients via portability services.
