Appointment

The Argentine government appointed Héctor Huici as the new undersecretary of communications and connectivity at the innovation, science and technology ministry.

Huici is a lawyer and specialist in ICT and digital technology. He was ICT secretary during the government of Mauricio Macri from 2016 to 2019.

New CEO

Millicom announced last week that Marcelo Benítez will take over as the new CEO starting in June.

Paraguayan Benítez joined the company 30 years ago and progressed in different roles until his appointment as CEO of Tigo Panama.

Under Benitez's leadership, Tigo Panama completed the integration of Cable Onda and Movistar Panama.

Mauricio Ramos will continue as Millicom chairman. Maxime Lombardini will also join the board and will continue as president and COO until the end of the year.

Sutel board complete

The board of Costa Rican regulator Sutel will resume normal functions following the appointment of Federico Chacón and Carlos Watson as full members and Ana Eugenia Rodríguez as an alternate.

The appointments mean there will be the quorum necessary to resume functions after four months of inactivity.

Public consultation

The deadline to comment on the second draft of the call for Colombian ICT ministry’s Líneas de Fomento 2.0 project that seeks to connect 136,000 households in strata 1 and 2 is Tuesday.

Intellectual property

The US Trade Representative Office removed the Dominican Republic from the intellectual property watch list.

The government of the Caribbean country is committed to continuing to take enforcement action on copyright infringement, including signal piracy, and to increase capacity through training and engagement with the United States, regulator Indotel said in a release.

The agency added that it has achieved the signing of cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening the regulation and supervision of content generators and providers of radio, television and subscription television broadcasting services.

Collaboration

Mexican telecom regulator IFT and the association of datacenter companies MEXDC signed a coordination agreement with the objective of promoting digital transformation, the development of the digital ecosystem and digital infrastructures through the use of ICT.

The collaborative work will promote the development of a cybersecurity culture in companies that use datacenters to manage, protect and safeguard the data they use, contributing with actions that allow digital development in a secure way, according to an IFT release.
