“The first semester of 2024 closes with a 60% higher sale than that registered in the similar period of 2023,” said Alberto Morisaki, Manager of Economic Studies of the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP) after noting that at the end of the first semester of the In 2024, 3,217 electrified vehicles (hybrid and electric) were sold in the country, while in the first six months of 2023 there were 2,004 units.

In addition to the aforementioned semiannual increase, the union representative also highlighted that sales in the first half of 2024 represented 3.8% of the total light and heavy vehicles sold. “The performance of this segment of the automotive market is due to the fact that more and more companies in the sector are marketing electrified vehicles; Between January and June of this year we have had nearly 60 brands and more than 140 models available to Peruvians, in addition to the greater importance that the population gives to caring for the environment and saving through the use of these vehicles.

When disaggregating the information by type of technology, it is observed that in the first half of 2024 the most marketed eco-friendly vehicles were light hybrids or MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 1,597 units, which meant a annual increase of 38.3%, followed by conventional hybrids or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 1,294 units and a growth of 102.2%, pure electric vehicles or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) with 181 units and an increase of 64.5% and hybrids plug-in vehicles or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 145 units, 46.5% higher compared to the first half of 2023. “According to the results, the increase in sales of conventional or hybrid vehicles is striking. HEV, pure electric or BEV, and plug-in hybrids or PHEV,” commented Morisaki.

Despite the growth of this segment of the automotive market, he added, the penetration levels in the country are very low if we compare it with countries in the region, such as Colombia, where out of every 100 new light and heavy vehicles sold , 23 are electrified (23%), “in Ecuador that figure is 13%, in Mexico it is greater than 7%, and Peru only 4%,” indicated the economist after noting that “the difference in the development of this market is a consequence of the existence of public policies dictated by countries and that aim to improve the quality of life of their population through an environment with lower levels of pollution,” he concluded.
