Sempra wind farm in Mexico gets environmental nod

A new wind farm in Mexico's Baja California state has received the green light from environment ministry Semarnat.

The 330MW Cimarrón wind farm will be located in Tecate municipality, close to the US border, and will be focused on exporting power to the US through the state's connection with the California Independent System Operator (ISO).

The project is being developed by Sempra Infrastructure subsidiary Energía Sierra Juárez, owner of the Rumorosa solar park and the Sierra Juárez wind farm, also in the northwestern state.

Cimarrón will link to the existing transmission line used to export energy generated by the neighboring Sierra Juárez wind farm. The energy will be transmitted from Tecate to the ECO substation in San Diego and then into the California grid.

Last year, Sempra Infrastructure closed a 20-year supply deal with Silicon Valley Power, a municipal utility serving that region of northern California, to be supplied by Cimarrón.

At the time of signing the deal, Sempra said it expected the wind farm to start operations sometime in 2024.
