Senate says "no" to additional funds

Bnamericas
Puerto Rico's senate has approved a resolution which rejects granting additional public funds to private operator Ondeo to carry out works for the aqueduct and sewerage authority (AAA), El Nuevo Dia reported. Ondeo had requested an additional US$93mn to operate the island's water system, while the current contract is US$2.5bn/year for 10 years, BNamericas previously reported. Ondeo directors have argued that despite remuneration, the company suffers losses. The Senate also passed a resolution to build a desalination plant in the southeast, and another motion to voice contamination complaints for chemical dumping in the island's aquifers. Ondeo claims there were mistakes in the data when the contract was signed. Larger cities such as capital San Juan, Caguas and Ponce had 50% more water pipes than thought. The island's dilapidated water system has stymied urban development projects due to lack of drinking water. Puerto Rico's water tanks have a low, two-hour storage capacity, compared to the standard 24 hours. In addition, San Juan has 146 water tanks for a population of 1.2 million residents, while Spanish city Cordoba with the same population has just two, the paper added.
