Sheinbaum keeps LPG price cap in place

Bnamericas

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum does not plan to lift the price cap on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which was implemented by her predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2021.

"We are going to continue with the same policy," Sheinbaum said during her morning press conference.

Fuel distributors had called for the lifting of the maximum price cap on LPG, which is widely used by households and small businesses.

"The price of LPG has to be reasonable and allow profits for the gas companies, but a price that allows Mexican families who use LPG not to pay too much," Sheinbaum said.

She added that LPG prices fell 30% when she was mayor of Mexico City.

The formula used for calculating the cap prevents the distributors from raising LPG prices without limit, she said.
