Siemens Energy denies any immediate plans for H2 plant in Lázaro Cárdenas

In response to recent media reports, Siemens Energy said it has no near-term plans to build a green hydrogen plant at the Lázaro Cárdenas port in the Mexican state of Michoacán.

“At the moment, the information mentioned by the media does not correspond to a developing business plan but rather to future projections that are part of our commitment to provide energy to Mexico,” said the company in an email sent to BNamericas.

“We are aware that the energy transition cannot be successful if governments, companies and society do not work together to find solutions. For this reason, at Siemens Energy we are in continuous dialogue with various stakeholders to move in this direction."

Last week, during an official trip to Europe, Michoacán governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla took to social media to call attention to a meeting with the German company. "In a meeting with the director of government relations of Siemens Energy, we evaluated the possibility of installing a hydrogen generating plant in Lázaro Cárdenas to serve the industrial, public transportation and automotive sectors, among others," he said.

The fact that the Mexican government has not drafted a green hydrogen framework yet has not stopped foreign companies from expressing an interest in related projects.

Recently, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Danish investment fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) will invest US$10bn in a green hydrogen plant in Oaxaca state and take charge of building one of 10 planned industrial parks along the country's planned interoceanic corridor. BNamericas has identified six other projects recently added to Mexico’s green hydrogen pipeline.
