Sinaloa state to build 100 reservoirs to tackle drought

Sinaloa state created a 500mn-peso (US$24.2mn) program to help 11 municipalities affected by the major drought in northern Mexico.

The program includes the construction of 100 reservoirs in rural areas, Francisco Javier López Cervantes, a spokesman for local water and sewage operator Ceapas told a webinar.

“The small reservoirs program is about finding the ideal hydraulic basins through technical studies in the highlands of the municipalities that are affected by drought conditions, in order to carry out the procedures through which we can access the required funds to invest in Sinaloa’s mountain range,” he said.

Each reservoir will cost 5mn pesos, store 50,000m3 of water and benefit five communities. Construction is expected to start this year.

The plan also involves reforestation and lowering dependency on the 11 reservoirs that currently supply the region.

Construction on two reservoirs not part of the program started previously.

López Cervantes said the next step involves building multiple hydraulic systems to reach all communities.
