Snapshot: 3 infrastructure projects for which Ecuador is seeking investors

Guillermo Lasso's government has a raft of projects in the pipeline in various sectors that involve total spending of around US$30bn and it is seeking private sector investment to develop them before his term as Ecuador's president ends in 2025.

These projects include several road infrastructure and logistics developments. Here, BNamericas takes a look at three of these initiatives for which investment amounts have been defined, which together will require more than US$200mn.

LOJA-CATAMAYO HIGHWAY

This is a brownfield project in which investments of US$86.1mn are expected. The initiative involves widening the road between the two cities in the south of the country to four lanes from the current two, as well as improving connections with Catamayo airport in Loja province.

The road is part of the highway E35, which is officially called Troncal de la Sierra, but is locally known as the Pan-American highway. It connects economically important areas in southern Ecuador.

Transport and public works minister  Marcelo Cabrera said last year that a concession process for the road should be offered sometime this year.

MONTECRISTI-LA CADENA HIGHWAY

This road is another brownfield initiative that includes the design, financing, repair, operation and maintenance of the La Cadena-Jipijapa highway corridor on the country's central coast, to decongest and reduce travel times.

The road corridor connects Manabí and Guayas provinces and is expected to involve an investment of US$63.9mn.

The initiative consists of expanding the road from two to four lanes, building a restaurant area and two toll stations, and carrying out road maintenance and operations for a 30-year period.

SANTO DOMINGO LOGISTICS PLATFORM

This is a greenfield project that entails building a specialized area to carry out activities with high added-value related to the transportation, logistics and distribution of products to support the country's sea and airports.

The development is estimated to cost some US$53.8mn and will be located in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province, on one of Ecuador's busiest highways.

The initiative involves the design, construction, operation and maintenance, and financing of the logistics platform, which will involve services including truck parking facilities, general and refrigerated cargo warehouses, cargo custody and cargo consolidation, among others.

It is expected to take two years to build.
