Snapshot: Argentina’s installed distribution generation capacity in 2023

Bnamericas

Argentina’s installed distributed generation capacity climbed 63.7% last year to 30.7MW, according to data from the federal energy department

Over 17MW more was in the pipeline as of December.

The data corresponds to projects installed under federal law No. 27,424, which offers power injection tax relief for user-generators with up to 300kW of capacity connected. Under the regime, the overall maximum is 2MW.

Distributed generation capacity growth could potentially climb if a government push to roll out smart meters in the coverage areas of Buenos Aires distributors Edenor and Edesur occurs. Smart meters, along with time of use electricity rates, are seen as tools to help flatten demand curves and support distributed generation.

The federal government has also implemented hefty electricity rate hikes which could constitute a carrot, especially for user-generators looking to inject.

A sweeping deregulation decree issued in December scraps multiple articles of law No. 27,424 concerning incentives and promotion. A congressional committee was due to start the process of analyzing various decrees on Thursday despite associated deadlines having expired, local press reported.

Argentina’s biggest distributors, Edenor has around 3.25mn clients across a concession area of about 4,640km2 and Edesur has some 2.5mn clients spread across 3,300km2.

In Chile, around 190MW of capacity is installed under the country's netbilling framework.

CAPACITY

Of the installed 30.7MW capacity in Argentina in December, the commercial/industrial sector accounted for 22.5MW, and the residential sector 4.08MW of the rest.

USER-GENERATORS

In terms of user-generators, the residential sector had 927 of the total 1,593 and the commercial/industrial sector 581, with the public sector and others representing the balance.
