Snapshot: Big Tech’s workforce investments in LatAm

Driven by growth in cloud and online services to serve Latin America, global Big Tech companies – Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta – are on a hiring spree in the region, according to job data from LinkedIn.

Amazon is looking for the most staff, with 2,135 positions open on the professional social network as of Monday (March 14). The figures include 615 jobs with its cloud sister company Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Notably, a large part of all open roles at Amazon Web Services involve the expansion of datacenter and cloud services, as the company is seeking solutions architects, developers and sales and commercial representatives.

AWS is the global leader in public cloud and has been scaling up its investments in Latin America, including in infrastructure for edge computing and points of presence (PoP). To date, the company’s sole Latin American cloud region (datacenter cluster) is in Brazil’s São Paulo state.

Most of the investments in new staff are aimed at Brazil (733), followed by Mexico (675), Costa Rica (372), Colombia (153), Argentina (109), and Chile (39), among others.

Costa Rica is an important nearshore and customer service center for Amazon in Latin America. Last year, the company announced plans to hire 2,000 face-to-face and remote staff in the country.

AWS will also launch cloud infrastructure in six Latin American cities by 2023.

According to the latest available data, AWS made US$17.8bn in revenues for Amazon during 4Q21, up 40% year-on-year, with US$62.2bn for the 2021 financial year, up from US$45.4bn the previous year.

MICROSOFT

Microsoft, meanwhile, had 839 positions open in Latin America as of Monday.

These include Microsoft, Microsoft Leap, Microsoft for Startups and Microsoft 365 Partner. Mexico accounted for 313, followed by Costa Rica (152), Brazil (135), Colombia (101), Chile (77) and Argentina (24).

Last month, Microsoft inaugurated its expanded offices in Costa Rica’s capital San José, making the local infrastructure the company’s largest in Latin America.

According to Microsoft, its operations in Costa Rica are now staffed by 1,500 people, up from just 60 four years ago. Microsoft has operated in the Central American nation for 28 years.

Microsoft’s cloud division Azure ranks second worldwide in terms of market share, after AWS. The company has two Azure cloud regions in Latin America: Brazil South, located in São Paulo, and Brazil Southeast, in Rio de Janeiro.

The company has already announced plans to open a new cloud datacenter region in Querétaro, Mexico.

However, in Chile, where the company is investing US$317mn in another cloud region, there is only one position open.

ALPHABET AND META

Alphabet appears on LinkedIn with 343 roles open in Latin America, all of them related to Google

Brazil accounts for 148 of the total, followed by Mexico (101), Argentina (51), Colombia (19) and Chile (17).

Facebook’s parent Meta, for its part, only has 64 open positions in the region, including for WhatsApp and Instagram. Of the total, 36 are in Brazil, 13 in Argentina and 11 in Mexico.

Many of the positions are for sales, privacy, policy and legal affairs.
