Solar projects secure Central America grid access

Central American power interconnection commission CRIE has authorized two solar projects in Nicaragua to access the regional transmission network (RTR).

One approval is for Interamerican Solar’s 16MW El Jaguar project and the other is for Nordic Solar’s 14MW San Isidro project, both in the area of Malpaisillo in León department.

The green light comes after no objections were expressed by regional grid operator EOR and the country’s state power transmission company Enatrel, CRIE information shows.

The connection requests were submitted in April 2021.

Nicaragua’s energy and mines ministry granted the companies 30-year generation licenses in 2021 to build, put in service, and operate and maintain the parks, which already hold environmental authorizations and will boast battery energy storage.

Meanwhile, CRIE published for consultation a proposal to modify the norm related to the administration and operation of RTR maintenance scheduling in a bid to improve coordination between stakeholders.
