South American aluminum output retreats to 1984 level
Production of primary aluminum in South America tumbled 25.5% year-on-year to 82,000t in January, the lowest level seen since February 1984 (81,000t).
Compared to December (92,000t), output was down 10.9%, the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) reported.
The region produced 1.136Mt of aluminum in February 2018 to January 2019, while output in 2018 reached 1,164Mt, IAI data show.
IAI's South America figures are for Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, the region's only producers of primary aluminum.
Reported global primary aluminum production totaled 5.30Mt in January, down from 5.36Mt in the same month of 2018, the IAI said. Global output in 2018 reached 64.3Mt.
