Spain's Aena plans to invest up to US$850mn in Brazilian airports

Spain's Aena plans to invest up to 4.5bn reais (US$850mn) in expansion and improvement works at 11 of its Brazilian airport concessions.

“We’re now in the engineering phase and, until construction companies are hired, we don't really have definitive amounts but our estimate is that it will be 4.5bn reais, of which 2bn reais will be for Congonhas and another 2.5bn reais for 10 other airports in this block," the CEO of Aena Brasil, Santiago Yus, said at a hearing in Brazil’s lower house.

In 2022, Aena won a concession auction for a block of 11 airports. The 30-year contract includes Congonhas and airports in Campo Grande, Corumbá and Ponta Porã, in Mato Grosso do Sul state; Santarém, Marabá, Parauapebas and Altamira, in Pará; and Uberlândia, Uberaba and Montes Claros, in Minas Gerais.

The company plans to build a new terminal at Congonhas by June 2028 and a new boarding and disembarking area, to double the size of the São Paulo airport, which is one of the largest in Brazil.

Aena has been active in Brazil since 2020 and operates a total of 17 airports, which are responsible for around 20% of the country’s air traffic.
