Storm damages exceed US$5mn

Bnamericas
The governor of the US Virgin Islands, Charles Turnbull, has declared a state of emergency in the territory after a weeklong storm has caused more than US$5mn in damages, the Virgin Island Daily News reported. Some 39cm of rain fell between Monday and Friday (Nov.10-14) in west-central St. Croix Island alone. "It's worse than some of the hurricanes, water wise," the paper quoted public works commissioner Wayne Callwood as saying. Roads have been barricaded by rocks and mudslides and storm sewers flooded. The public works department has no budget to repair damaged sewers, roads and culverts. Callwood said he hopes some of the money will eventually be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Dry weather is expected to return by mid-week, the paper added.
